We provided civil and structural engineering design services that comprised the construction of a major extension to the existing building house and the refurbishment of part of the existing boarding house. A large section of the existing boarding house was retained in use during the construction works located only a short distance from the construction works and subsequently demolished once the new building was completed.
The new two storey building includes predominately communal and service/ancillary areas at ground floor including a staff flat with accommodation for 24 pupils at 1st floor level in single and shared rooms.
The building was constructed using a steel frame up to 1st floor level with load bearing masonry above supporting a timber trussed rafter roof. The timber trussed rafter roof structure was designed to incorporate service walkways to facilitate the M&E installation and assist with ongoing maintenance in the future. The building incorporates natural ventilation to most areas and PV panels located to the roof.
Single storey link buildings were created to join the new boarding house to the existing. Throughout the design and construction process careful consideration was required with respect to the construction logistics and phasing/sequencing of the works to reduce the disruption to the school.
