Elaine Herbert House
Norwich

Elaine Herbert House is a sheltered housing development constructed within the historic grounds of the Great Hospital, Norwich, on the site of the former care home, which was demolished in 2022.

This three storey facility provides 24 modern, affordable homes for older residents, supporting independent living within the historic medieval hospital.

The building was constructed using traditional flint masonry at ground-floor level, with brickwork above, carefully detailed to integrate with the surrounding historic buildings.

Founded in 1249, the Great Hospital, part of the Norwich 12, provides sheltered housing for over 100 older residents across its estate. Rossi Long Consulting has delivered over 25 years of engineering services at the Great Hospital, supporting the successful and sensitive delivery of many complex projects.

Our team provided full civil and structural engineering services for the demolition of a 1970s accommodation block and the construction of a new three storey building within the historic grounds of the Great Hospital.

The project was constrained by its proximity to listed buildings, an archaeologically sensitive site, and a flood risk location, requiring careful methodology and close coordination with the wider design team.
Rossi Long Consulting developed robust structural solutions to support complex stone and traditional masonry detailing, ensuring the new building responded sensitively to its historic setting while meeting modern performance standards.

Drawing on our long standing relationship with the Great Hospital, we applied lessons learned from previous projects to deliver a high quality, durable engineering solution that represents excellent value for money.
