We provided civil and structural engineering services on the new single and two storey 36 Bed facility on the site of the Julian Hospital in Norwich. The project was part of a three year consultant framework with the Norfolk and Suffolk Mental Health NHS Trust. The innovative design incorporated the latest research on the needs of dementia patients. Based around internal courtyards, it also includes therapy areas and a Research Academy.
The construction comprised single storey timber frame wards and two storey composite steel frame facilities wing with associated re-configuration of the estate road system. A BREEAM standard of Excellent was achieved through sustainable techniques including green roofs, ground source heat pumps and photovoltaic cells.
Significant added value was achieved through careful co-ordination of the architecture, structure and building services using a Building Information Modelling approach. Revit 3D design and drafting software model was combined with the services information to expose and avoid clashes.
