We provided civil and structural engineering services for the new landmark building within the centre of the Norfolk market town of Wymondham. The building was constructed on an existing car park and is twice the size of the previous library providing more space for events and exhibitions.
The aim of the project was to create a distinctive, contemporary and sustainable building that provided greatly improved facilities to encourage wider use in the community. The increase in new members, visitors and items loaned since the library opened is testament to the success of the new building. Further recognition has been received as the building received an award for structural excellence in the IStructE East Anglian Branch Awards.
The single storey building was designed using a hybrid steel and glue laminated timber braced frame to form the tiered fan shaped roof construction radiating from a conical rotunda. The drainage incorporated permeable paving and attenuated discharge of roof runoff on the confined site.
