We provided civil and structural engineering design services for the construction of a mixed use residential development on the outskirts of Cambridge. The three storey building comprised 28 affordable flats predominately on the 1st and 2nd storeys. At ground floor level 7 retail units were formed varying in size between 75m2 to 400m2 including a convenience store. The development also included a separate terrace of 7No. new build 3 bedroom houses.
The mixed use building was constructed using a concrete frame structure to up to 1st floor level in order to create the open plan internal places. Above the transfer slab a load bearing masonry structure with precast concrete floors and cantilevered steel balconies were provided to form the apartments above. The houses were constructed using traditional load bearing masonry.
The site was part of the wider Orchard Park and as such was fully serviced with respect to foul and surface water drainage. Careful consideration was required with respect to coordination of the interfaces between the masterplan adoptable highway and drainage infrastructure serving the development and the new building works.
